چکیده

Biological cells can be treated as an inhomogeneous particle. In addition to biomaterials, inhomogeneous particles are also important in more traditional colloidal science. By using two energy methods that are based on Legendre polynomials and Green’s function, respectively, we investigate the interaction between biological cells or colloidal particles in the presence of an external electric field, in an attempt to investigate the effect of inhomogeneity on crossover frequencies across which the interaction force changes from attraction to repulsion or vice versa. The predictions by the two methods agree with each other very well. It is shown that there exist two kinds of crossover frequencies p, one from attraction to repulsion and the other from repulsion to attraction as external frequencies increase. The first p strongly depends on the degree of inhomogeneity, while the second p does not. This work has relevance to manipulation of biological cells or colloidal particles. © 2009 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.3116628

Dielectrophoretic effect of nonuniform electric fields on the protoplast cell

In recent years, dielectrophoresis based microfluidics systems have been used to manipulate colloids, inert particles, and biological microparticles, such as red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, cancer cells, bacteria, yeast, micro‌organisms, proteins, DNA, etc. In the current study the governing electric potential equations have been solved in the presence of cell for the purpose of ...

Observation and simulation of electrohydrodynamic instabilities in aqueous colloidal suspensions

When an alternating linear electric field is applied to an aqueous suspension of micron-size polystyrene particles, hydrodynamic instabilities are seen at a frequency range between 2 and 200 kHz. The formation of elongated bands of particles oriented at certain angles relative to the direction of the applied electric field and circulation of particles within the bands are observed. We examine t...

Optoelectrofluidic control of colloidal assembly in an optically induced electric field.

This letter reports a method for controlling the organization of colloidal particles using optoelectrofluidic mechanisms. This optoelectrofluidic colloidal assembly (OCA) can be an efficient and simple way of preparing 2D colloidal crystals. Here, we present the first investigation of 2D colloidal assembly due to the electrohydrodynamic flows in an optoelectrofluidic device. The normalized dist...

Numerical evidence for thermally induced monopoles.

Electric charges are conserved. The same would be expected to hold for magnetic charges, yet magnetic monopoles have never been observed. It is therefore surprising that the laws of nonequilibrium thermodynamics, combined with Maxwell's equations, suggest that colloidal particles heated or cooled in certain polar or paramagnetic solvents may behave as if they carry an electric/magnetic charge. ...
